2008Chester County Wizards 13U - Head Coach: Shawn Doughtery


2008 Season

The 2008 Wizards 13U Division II team entered the Mid Atlantic Regional Championships with high hopes and went on to exceed their own expectations. An energetic squad led by balanced scoring, tenacious press defense, and terrific foul shooting combined for a 5-0 run in which the Wizards outscored their opponents by 17 points a game.

The Regional Champions continued their success at the National Championships in Kingsport, TN with determination, hustle and desire. The undersized Wizards outplayed teams more experienced teams with defensive prowess and unselfish offensive teamwork. The 9th place finish capped a successful season of improved ability, growing confidence and fond memories. The 10 players, 3 coaches and all the parents enjoyed a fabulous ride from tryouts in February to the Nationals in July.


Coach Shawn Dougherty

A four year coach with the Wizards organization whose teams both Division I and II have medaled at each Regional Championship. The 2008 squad won the Mid Atlantic Division II championship and finished 9th at the National Championships in Kingsport, TN.

A ten year veteran of CYO coaching, Dougherty has guided three teams to the PHL Archdiocese Championship finals, winning the title in 2008. Raised in a highly competitive athletic family, Dougherty is a former three sport athlete at Salesianum School in Wilmington, DE and brother of PGA/Champions Tour Professional Golfer, Ed Dougherty.


Coach Jim Hegarty

Jim Hegarty has assisted Shawn Dougherty for 2 years in Division II. Each year the team has qualified for Nationals, this last year winning the Mid Atlantic Div. II Region and finishing 9th at Nationals. Jim has also coached CYO at SS. Philip and James.

Jim enjoys the competition and intensity of AAU. He enjoys the challenge of identifying the girls' strengths and putting them into positions where they can succeed as players. Jim's goal for the girls is for them to play at the next level of basketball. Jim believes in hard work so while trying to make practice fun, the girls practice hard. This hard work paid off this last year with 50 plus wins.


Coach Bert Alicea

Bert Alicea has been coaching Girls basketball for the past 10 years. He has been a head coach in the Malvern and Drib-L leagues and for the past 8 years has been involved with CYO and St. Elizabeth?s Parish in Uwchlan Township, PA. He has been the head coach for both the JV and Varsity teams.

Bert is trained as a Psychologist and works with girls in developing both the physical and mental parts of the game. He works with them on basic fundamentals and tries to instill his passion in the girls by having them develop confidence, intensity and a positive attitude on the court and in life.

In 2008 Bert joined the Wizards Organization as an Assistant Coach of the U 13 team. The 2008 U13 team went undefeated in Regionals and won the Mid Atlantic Division II Championship and finished 9th at the National Championships in Kingsport, TN.
